    It works like an easy-to-use computer that runs word processing software and office management software. The EM-850fx is equipped with an internal memory and you can install the optional 3.5-inch floppy disk drive FB-500. Use 3.5-inch 2DD micro-floppy disks for the optional disk drive.

    General Description This typewriter has three main modes: word processing (WP), typewriting (TYPE), and option (OPTION) modes. When you turn on the typewriter, the word processing mode is selected and the WP MAIN screen is displayed. If you have turned off the typewriter while editing a new file, the entry area for a new filename appears.

    Setting up Your Typewriter Power Connect the power cord to the receptacle. The power switch is located on the left side of the typewriter. When the power switch is turned on, the carrier moves to the left end. The daisy wheel homes for accurate positioning. You are ready to operate the typewriter.

    Lithium Battery This typewriter uses a lithium battery to retain various format data. When you turn on the typewriter, it may beep 5 times and the message lamp may flicker and indicate the number "0". The error message also appears. The connector of the back-up lithium battery is disconnected or the installed lithium battery has gone dead and the memory has been cleared.
  • Page 18 Replace the old battery with a new one. • Disconnect the connector and remove the old battery. • Plug in the connector and install a new battery. Close the fixing cover of the junction cable. Make sure that the junction cable (white flat cable) is positioned horizontally along the platen and carrier shaft.

    Display The typewriter is equipped with the 2-line x 80-character Liquid Crystal Display. The display sliows the text and current status of the typewriter. It also shows guidc/error messages. The display does not show characters and symbols as they are. Bold characters flashes on and off.

    Acoustic Cover/Glare-proof Plate The acoustic cover suppresses the sound of the printing mechanism, and pre­ vents dust and foreign matter from entering the typewriter. The glare-proof plate prevents the reflection of light. Follow these steps to install the acoustic cover and glare-proof plate: Remove the plastic spacer.

    Paper Support Assembly The paper support assembly facilitates the paper insertion. It consists of the paper support, paper guide, and paper support extension. Follow these steps and make the best use of it: Install the paper support assembly onto the rear side o f the typewriter. The paper support locks at the fixed angle.

    Keyboard Angle Adjustment The keyboard can tilt and position at three different angles for optimum ease and comfort in typing. To increase the keyboard angle: Lift up the keyboard to the desired position, and the keyboard locks in place. Make sure that both sides are at the same angle. To decrease the keyboard angle: Press the release buttons on both sides.

    etachable Keyboard The keyboard is detachable from the typewriter unit. You can position the keyboard for your best location. Follow these steps: Open the top cover. Remove right and left screws located inside. Detach the keyboard by pulling it toward you. Take care not to disconnect the keyboard cable.
  • Page 25 Remove screws and upper joint plates from the lower joint plates on Lower Joint Plate Remove the lower joint plates from the keyboard on right and left sides. Keep screws and plates in safe place for later use. For installation, reverse theses steps.

    baisy Wheel This typewriter makes use of a daisy wheel. A set o f type font is cast on the spoke end of the wheel. The wheel spins to position a particular character at the printing position and the printing mechanism strikes it from behind to impact the character against the ribbon and paper.

    Four types of ribbons are available for this typewriter: correctable carbon, multi-use carbon, one-time carbon, and fabric. You can also use narrow ribbons supplied for Brother's earlier models EM-80, 100, and 200 series typewriters but they are not recommended for use with this typewriter. For more information about the ribbons, consult the dealer where you purchased the typewriter.

    Word Processing Mode This typewriter can work like a computer that runs word processing software. You can create, edit, and print text on the display. This section contains the quick tour of the word processing (WP) mode. Selecting the Word Processing Mode When you turn on the power switch, the WP mode is automatically selected and the WP MAIN screen appears.

  • Page 39 In some cases you need to suppress the automatic return function. Pressing the CODE + SPACEBAR or CODE + HYPHEN keys docs not cause the cursor to return automatically. These key operations arc called Space Continue and Hyphen Continue respectively. A required space or hyphen is added instead of a normal space or hyphen.
  • Page 40 As you see, the text is typed flush left but ragged right. This status is called non-justified. You can easily justify the text. Once you store files, you can edit them later.

    nagement When you turn on the typewriter or you finish saving files, the WP MAIN screen appears to show what files the storage location contains. You can manage files on this screen. Unnecessary files can be deleted and existing files can be copied for further editing or backup.

    The following subsections describe these keys available when you are on the WP MAIN screen except the CODE + 5 (PRINT) keys. For printing files, refer to the other chapter "Printing." Disk Menu or Memory Menu If your typewriter does not have the optional floppy disk drive, the file storage location is only the internal memory.

    Press the CODE + (RENAME) keys. The display shows the entry area where you define a new filename. 4 TYPE FILENAME AND PRESS ' Filename|_______ < - LETTER12 /MEMORY Type a new filename. Define a unique filename with up to 8 characters. Press the (Return) key.

    Insert the original disk into the drive and press the (Return) key. Pressing the ESC key cancels the disk copy function halfway. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the typewriter completes copying the disk. While copying a disk, the cursor locates on the file being copied. When finished with copying the disk, the display shows the file list of the destination disk with the cursor located on the last-copied file.

    Initializing the Memory or Disk You can initialize the selected storage location and delete all the existing files. Be careful not to initialize the memory or the disk that contains necessaty files. Follow these steps: Select the storage location to show the file list with the CODE + 9 (DISK) keys or CODE + 0 (MEMORY) keys.

    Typewriting Mode This typewriter can work like an interactive electronic typewriter. This section contains a quick tour of the typewriting (TYPE) mode. Selecting the Typewriting Mode When you turn on the power switch, the WP mode is automatically selected. To switch to the TYPE mode, quit the other modes (WP and OPTION). To enter the TYPE mode: •Press the TY PE key to quit the WP mode •Press the CODE + OPTIO N keys to quit the OPTION mode.

  • Page 59 When you are working with the typewriter, you sometimes make misspellings or change your mind for the text idea. To streamline the typing works in the TYPE mode, you can type the text line by line. This operating mode is called L/L (Line by Line) mode.

When you type a space or hyphen in the hot zone, the typewriter prints a line of text and the automatic carrier return takes place. The word typed in the hot zone is wrapped around, allowing you to type other lines of text.

    6ption Mode This section contains a quick tour of the option (OPTION) mode. With some optional devices and programs installed, you can get more out of this typewriter: •Optional Computer Interface •File Conversion Program, etc. Selecting the Option Mode When you turn on the power switch, the WP mode is automatically selected. To switch to the OPTION mode, quit the WP or TYPE mode.
  • Page 63 Press the CURSOR keys to select the desired program. Press the (Return) key to run the selected program. Now you can work with the selected program. However, go onto the next step, because this practice is not for describing the operation of option programs.

    Special Application Functions This typewriter features versatility. Two special application functions are available on this typewriter. One is the merge function for printing many letters of the same contents including different inside address. Another is the optional electronic spelling dictionary and optional electronic thesaurus. This section contains the general descriptions of these functions.

  • Page 66 • CODE + SCAN C (Scan Check) Key—Spell Checking the Specified Word in the Text The typewriter looks up the word specified by the cursor in the main and supplemental dictionaries. If the specified word is not found in the dictionaries, the typewriter beeps.

    Using Your Typewriter Setting Page Layout (WP Mode Only) Page parameters for a text file in (he WP mode contain paper size, lop margin, top space, l>otl<iii) space and bottom margins. They determine the page layout including the text area. When you type the text and reach the end of the text area on the display, the typewriter automatically insert a page break that demands new paper.

[13] Press the PAGE key to finish setting the page parameters. The screen returns to the last one and the page layout symbol appears at the beginning of that page.

    Header and Footer For a multiple-page file, you can print the same text such as report title, chapter title, and section title at the top or bottom of each page. The typing areas for such text is called a header and footer respectively. While editing the body text, you cannot see the header or footer text on the display.

    Changing Page Size (TYPE Mode Only) When you are in the TYPE mode, you need to insert new paper before typing. The first typing line is determined by the top margin and the last line by the bottom margin (or page end). When you insert new paper with the jjf (Paper Insert) key, the typewriter automatically loads it until the first printing line comes to the printing mechanism.

    End Set When the carrier exceeds the last typing line and you attempt to continue typing, the message appears to tell that you have reached the page end. Most keys including alphanumeric keys and f J (Return) key lock up until you cancel die page end status.

    Enhancing Your Text Now on to the next step to enhance the text with distinguishing type styles such as bold and underline.     Expand Print You can type the text, automatically adding a space between characters. With this expanding function, you can easily type the title of your report. Follow these steps: Press the X X X (Expand) key to activate the expanding function. The X X X (Expand) indicator comes on.

    Follow these steps to type the mathematical notation "22 = 4" that includes a superscript number "2": Type the character "2". Press the | (Reverse Index) key. Even if you press the J (Reverse Index) key once again, it does not work. Type the number "2".

    Overprinting Sometimes you need lo lype a slashed zero "0" to distinguish it from the al­ phabet character ” 0 " and sometimes you need to include a division mark mathematical expressions. The typew riter may not be able to print these characters directly because some keyboards and daisy wheels don't have these fonts.

    Strike-out (WP Mode Only) Sometimes you waul to delete text but you need to show it as deleted. For example the legal documentation sometimes requires you to show which clauses are deleted. W illi the strike-out function, you can easily strike out (ext with slashes o r hyphens.

    Between Tab Stops You can center the text between normal flush left tab stops. Before you begin the following steps, set normal flush left tab stops at your desired positions. Press the — R (Tab) or CODE + B TAB keys once or several times to move the cursor to any normal flush left tab stop.

    Follow these steps to uncenter the text: Move the cursor to any position of the centered text. Press the CTR key. The text is uncentered and returned to the tab stop. The text is also uncentered by deleting the centering symbol ( |T| ) from the display.

    Tractor Paper Feeder TF-300 The tractor paper feeder TF-300 is optionally available for this typewriter. This feeder is used to feed continuous form paper. Installation Follow these steps to install the tractor paper feeder TF-300 onto this typewriter: Turn off the typewriter. Remove the paper support assembly and the plastic spacer located in front of it.
