3.0 System overview
• The ABB Smart® Tool + system crimps electrical
connectors faster with fewer tool parts, and
provides documented proof that the crimp
quality exceeds UL/CSA requirements. The
data can be shared with inspectors,
underwriters, facility owners, or used to
enhance user's quality management system.
Connectivity is not needed to crimp lugs. The
tool can be used without a mobile device. It
stores crimp data until user is ready to transfer.
Once data is transferred, the mobile app saves
it until user has an internet connection and
uploads it to the cloud for permanent storage
or sharing.
3.1 Crimp tool
• The ABB Smart® Tool + is a dieless tool, able to
crimp copper connectors from 3/0 AWG to 750
kcmil and aluminum connectors from 1/0 AWG
to 600 kcmil using just one crimp* per
connector. When used with ABB Smart™
connectors, no additional data input or
adjustment is required. The crimp tool
recognizes connector size and material type,
and with a pull of the trigger, completes crimp
to the correct dimension. Pressure feedback is
also used to ensure a good crimp. Crimp data
is saved until it's convenient for user to transfer
it to the application program running on your
mobile device. (*Aluminum connectors used
with copper conductors, require two crimps.)
3.2 Smart™ Connectors
• Smart™ connectors feature a small RFID chip
mounted on an out-of-the-way section. This
chip enables the Smart® Tool + to identify the
connector, and automatically adjust itself to
apply proper crimp conditions. This eliminates
any extra time or effort to adjust the tool.
Standard Color-Keyed® connectors can also be
used, ensuring that you won't be held up on a
job site if you happen to run out of Smart™
connectors.
3.3 Mobile application
• Transferring data from the crimp tool is easy
with the software developed to run on your
Apple® or Android® tablets or phones. The
software can be downloaded for free from the
app stores. Mobile software also provides the
capability to record crimp locations and torque
used to fasten the connector to the electrical
system, and tools to upload your data to the
cloud for sharing or long-term storage.
3.4 Cloud storage
• Each customer has the capability to save crimp
data to cloud storage. Data is accessible from
anywhere with either a standard computer or
the mobile application software. Each
customer has complete control over granting
access to the data. A variety of organization
and reporting tools are available to search,
view, and share data.
