Application

The wide area fibre-optic repeater (FO-Repeater) is a universally applicable device intended
for optical long-distance communication in the specified transmission band width. It serves
to transfer serial optical signals over long distances using single- and multimode fibre. Via
the serial inputs / outputs port 1 and port 2, synchronous and asynchronous signals are
transmitted. These are multiplexed and sent to port 3. Up to two devices with an optical
820 nm interface can be connected to port 1 and port 2, e. g. line differential protection
7SD52, 7SD610 or the RS232/820 nm converter type 7XV5652.
Figure 1 illustrates the establishment of an optical remote connection for transfer of operat-
ing and protection data using the FO-Repeater. Depending on the FO-Repeater version, the
specified transmission range is max. 4 km (2.5 miles) up to max. 170 km (105 miles).
Connection to multimode fibre (range up to 4 km, up to 8 km) or singlemode fibre (range up
to 24 km, up to 60 km, up to 100 km, up to 170 km) is provided via LC duplex connector at
port 3 and on the bidirectional FO-Repeater via single LC-connectors.
Note:
When using the 60-km device model for transmission links < 25 km, the 100-km
device model for < 50 km and the 170-km device model for < 100 km, the
attenuators must be connected to port 3 (see chapter Connection Notes). Thus,
overmodulations of the optical receivers are avoided.
Note:
The device variant for max. 8 km (multimode fibre) may not be used for
transmission lines of < 4 km.
