This example involves milling a manta ray from a free-form surface model. The manta ray is
modeled using a CAD/CAM system.

Example: Milling a manta ray
The manta ray is modeled as a free-form sur-
face in the CAM system using a digitized scat-
terplot. The machining strategies included 3D
plane roughing and several 3-axis and 5-axis
pre-finishing and finishing operations.
The face was machined, for example, using a
line-by-line finishing operation with axes per-
manently set at an angle. This technique
enabled optimum surface quality to be
achieved given the extreme level of curvature
involved.
Strategies for 5-axis residual material machin-
ing were used to finish the residual material,
e.g. undercutting without taking off the tool.
