CHAPTER 2 OPERATIONS AND TIMING

2.3.4 Detecting the Trailing Edge of the Last Original

A host copier with a relatively long paper path (from the cassette to the drum) is designed
to pick up paper early to increase printing speed, possibly having picked up the next sheet of
paper by the time the machine picks up the last original and places it on the copyboard
glass.
To avoid such a problem, the machine is designed to pick up originals in keeping with the
timing at which its host copier picks up paper. If the originals are 220 mm or shorter, it
picks up the first original and places it on the copyboard glass; then, it picks up the second
original and moves it beyond the registration roller.
If the recirculating lever is on the original tray, the machine will indicate to its host copier
the presence of the third original (and subsequent originals), causing the host copier to pick
up the next sheet of paper.
If the recirculating lever is not on the original tray, on the other hand, the machine will
indicate to its host copier the absence of an original (generating the RSS signal) so that its
host copier will not pick up the next sheet of paper.
