This chapter provides service procedures for the igni-
tion system, lights and other electrical equipment. Electri-
cal troubleshooting procedures are described in Chapter
Two. Wiring diagrams are at the end of this manual. Fa-
bles 1-6 are at the end of this chapter.

BATTERY

Failure to property maintain the battery reduces the ser-
vice life and may lead to starting problems. Recom-
mended battery capacity is listed in Table 1. Keep the
following in mind to prevent starting problems and maxi-
mize battery life.
1. Correct electrolyte level must be maintained at all
times. Refer to Care and Inspection.
2. Maintain the battery at full charge to reduce sulfation.
Remove the battery from the machine when not in use for
extended periods and periodically charge the battery.
3. Do not charge the battery at a high rate. Overcharging
causes high batter}' temperatures that shorten its service
life.
4. Do not allow the battery to freeze. If the machine is left
outside during freezing temperatures, make sure the bat-
tery is fully charged. If the machine is stored in cold

weather for long periods, remove the battery and store it in
a warm place.
CAUTION
A discharged battery will freeze, causing
battery damage. Keep the battery fully
charged when using it in subzero weather.
Care and Inspection
To service the electrolyte level correctly it is necessary
to remove the battery from the frame. Maintain the elee-
(Figure 1 j. If the electrolyte level is low, it is a good idea
to completely remove the battery to thoroughly clean, ser-
vice and check it.
On all models, the negative side is grounded. When re-
moving the battery, disconnect the negative
ble first, then the positive (+j cable. This minimizes the
chance of a tool shorting to ground when disconnecting
the positive cable.

3. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
4. Unlatch the battery hold-down straps and lift the bat-
