You are already familiar with some of the
Printer switches. For inst ance , you ha ve
already used the powe r switch; a lso, you
pr ooa bly had to change at least one control
pa nel switch when you talked to t he computer .
Some switches are optional; ther efore , your
Pr inter may not have all of the sw i tches
me ntion ed below. (See Fi gure 4 snowing the
con tr ol panel) .
T R ANSPAR~NCY SW I TCH.
Th e TRANSPARENCY switCh is normall y left in
t h e OFF position (d own) . [he uses of this
s witch will be discussed in a later section .
INri I BIT S~~ITCH .
No rmally this sw it ch shou l d be left in the
NORM (center) position . If you don ' t want
yo u r Keyboard or Reade r ma terial to print out
a t your Printer, put the I N HIBIT sw itc n in
tne PRINT position. This switch cannot ke ep
incom in g information (fro m a remot e source)

RATE SW ITCH.
The RATE switch sets t h e maximum number of
cha r acter s that can be transmitteJ or
received in a second. Earlier when you talked
to the Mark II computer, you set t h is switch
a t 10 (10 characters per second). It would
obviousl y be to you r advantage to go dt a
f a ster rate, since this results in receiving
mo re information from the computer in a given
time. <The Ma rk II COl1outer will run at 30
cnaracters per secon d ; call your account
r e oresentative for instructions for sign on
at' 30 characters pe r second).
For now let us r em ember that t h is switc h mu st
be in the same position at the transmit ti ng
and receiving p rinter.
LI Nt:FEED SWITCH .
If the LINEFEED switch is in the 1 position,
your Printer will Jive you single spacing
(vertically). If it is in t he 2 pOSition,
yo ur Printer will Ji v e you double spacing.
No te that the position of th i s switch does
not affect the s i g n I s sent to a remote
printer. Regard l ess of the position of this
switch , press in g the LF key will send only
on e Lin e t eed character to the remote printer.

The AUTO L.F. Sw itc n determ in es whether or
not you r Printer supp li es a n dutoma tic
lin e f eed a fter you type a RETU RN. If it is in
the ON pO Sition, a lin efeed is supp lied
immediate l y a fter each RETUR~ . If it is in
the OFF pos ition , t he automatic linefeed will
not occur after a RETuRN .
If the AuTO L. F. Switcn is on, not only is
the lin e fe ed Signal suoplied to your own
Printer, it is also sent to any pr inter that
mi ght be connected to you r Printer.
NOTE .
Regard l ess ot whiCh position the
AUTO L.F. SVlitc h is in, your
Printer will not su op ly a linefeed
character when a ~E TU R N is received
from your Tape Rea der or from a
remote printer .
CAPS ON LY SWITCH.
The CAPS ONLY switcn is located at the left
rear of the Printer . (See Figure 2) . It is a
to~qle switch wh i ch protrudes from the bustle
cover. W ith this switch in the " up " pos it ion ,
all letters wi ll print out in
u~per
case, and
the keys marked { } - and ' will print
out as \
[ 1
anJ
@
r espect ively. This
feature causes yo ur Pr inter's output to
resemble t hat of some other teleprinters.
With the CAPS OI' J LY s wit ch in the " jown"
position , t h e keyb oard will cause pr i ntin g
li ke a standard ty pewriter .
TALKING TO ANOTHER PRINTER
Cal lin g another printer is similar to callin g
a time sharing comouter , however , the
followin g points should be noted.

TRANSPARENCY and INHIBIT switches on
you r Printer. [hey should be as shown
below . (If you r Printer is not
equioped with eit he r of t h ese
switches, i gnore the instructions for

Printer must be runnin g in the ON

3 . Various types of in terfaci ng

important to remember that regardless
of the equipment used, one pr inter
must be in the or i ginate mode while
the other one is in the answe r mode .
