ISS Technology Update
Scenario
Single/Multiple fan(s) fail in OS without
health driver
*Depending upon the setting for the Insight Agents and the monitoring of SNMP traps, the system
administrator may be notified in the event of a fan failure.
Enabling graceful shutdown using the health driver
The health driver can be configured to perform a graceful system shutdown in the event that the server temperature exceeds a
safe limit. The configuration can be set in either of two ways:
• In the ROM-based Setup Utility (RBSU), using the Thermal Shutdown setting as shown in Figure 5-1.
• In the System Management Homepage (SMH) for the server, using the Thermal Degraded Action setting as shown in
Figure 5-2.
In both cases, the server can be set either to shut down gracefully typically within 5 degrees of critical level (thermal shutdown
enabled) or to power off without graceful shutdown at critical temperature levels (thermal shutdown disabled).
Behavior*
limit, at which time the system powers down immediately.
The error is logged in the IML.
iLO will attempt to perform a graceful shutdown by simulating an ACPI power
button press; however, this will have no effect in Windows if the console is locked.
The system continues to run until thermal sensors reach the hardware protection
limit, at which time the system powers down immediately.
