Inspecting the Gearcase
1. Inspect the gearcase castings for flaws or
scratches in the gasket surface area, and replace
the castings if necessary.
2. If the gearcase has a gasket and you plan to
reuse the castings, clean the machined surfaces
with a liquid gasket remover.
Note: Do not clean the oil from the
pressed-in output bushings.
3. If the gearcase does not have a gasket but
has a sealant, replace the gearcase halves with
the new gearcase half assemblies (part nos.
108-7324 and 108-7326).
Note: The new gasket will not fit on the old
gearcase castings.
4. Inspect the 2 gears, 4 bronze bushings, 2
shafts, and 3 oil seals for wear or damage, and
replace them if necessary.
Installing the Gasket and
Assembling the Gearcase
1. Assemble the gears and shafts into the
left-hand gearcase half.
2. Apply a dab of silicone sealant to the machined
surface of the left-hand gearcase half at the top
and bottom of the oil seal.
Note: Use Loctite 598 or an equivalent
automotive RTV silicone sealant. Do not use
silicone sealant anywhere else on the machined
surface.
3. Carefully align the new gasket onto the
left-hand gearcase half. The external loop in
the gasket can be bent up on the perforated
fold lines.
Press the gasket down into the 2 dabs of
sealant so that the sealant flows around the
gasket edges.
4. Carefully align the right-hand gearcase half.
Note: Do not disrupt the gasket.
5. If you reuse the left-hand casting, thoroughly
clean the screws and apply a thread locker
(Loctite 242 or an equivalent) before
assembling them.
Note: You do not need to do this step if you
are using a new left-hand casting.
6. Start the 9 screws by hand to avoid cross
threading, and torque them in sequence to 135
to 165 in-lb (17.0 N·m).
7. Remove the external loop of the gasket by
cutting along the perforations.
8. Assemble the augers to the gearcase.
Installing and Filling the
Gearcase
1. Install the auger assembly in the snowthrower;
refer to the service manual.
2. Move the snowthrower to a level surface.
3. Remove the pipe plug from the gearcase.
4. Add gear oil 80W-90 until it begins to flow out
of the fill hole.
5. Apply a thin coating of thread sealant to the
pipe plug threads before installing the pipe
plug.
6. Torque the pipe plug to 80 to 90 in-lb (9.6
N·m).
7. Coat the impeller shaft with an anti-seize
compound before installing the impeller pulley.
8. Install the pulley.
Note: Before tightening the square head
set screws on the impeller pulley, remove all
end play from the impeller shaft by pulling
it to the rear while turning the shaft slowly
in a clockwise direction (from the operating
position) and push the pulley forward against
the thrust washer; refer to the service manual.
9. Tighten the set screws.
Note: Check the gearcase fluid level during
setup, after every ten operating hours, and after
annual storage.
