MD1000 Expansion Configuration Considerations
When expanding your array with MD1000 enclosures, ensure that all MD1000s being connected to the
MD3000 are updated to the latest Dell MD1000 EMM Firmware from support.dell.com. Dell MD1000
EMM Firmware version A00 is not supported in an MD3000 array; attaching an MD1000 with
unsupported firmware causes an uncertified condition to exist on the array. You must upgrade the
MD1000 EMM Firmware to version A03 or later before attaching it to the MD3000.
Data from virtual disks created on a PERC 5 SAS controller cannot be directly migrated to an MD3000
or to an MD1000 expansion enclosure connected to an MD3000.
NOTICE:
If an MD1000 that was previously attached to PERC 5 SAS controller is used as an expansion enclosure
to an MD3000, the physical disks of the MD1000 enclosure will be reinitialized and data will be lost. All MD1000 data
must be backed up before attempting the expansion.
NOTICE:
MD1000 enclosures that are connected to a PERC 5/E Adapter might contain Maxtor SAS hard disk
drives, which are not supported in the MD3000 or MD1000 enclosures that are cabled to the MD3000. Ensure that
all Maxtor SAS hard disk drives are removed from the MD1000 prior to attaching the enclosure to the MD3000.
For more information on expanding to MD1000 enclosures, refer to the Installation Guide.
Configurations for Premium Features
The information that follows will better prepare users for using the snapshot and virtual disk copy
premium features of the Dell PowerVault systems.
NOTE:
The following host preparation sections also apply when using the snapshot and virtual disk copy features
through the CLI interface.
Preparing Host Servers to Create an Initial Snapshot Virtual Disk
NOTICE:
Before using the Snapshot Virtual Disks Premium Feature in a Microsoft
configuration, you must first map the snapshot virtual disk to the cluster node that owns the source virtual disk.
This ensures that the cluster nodes correctly recognize the snapshot virtual disk.
Mapping the snapshot virtual disk to the node that does not own the source virtual disk before the Snapshot
enabling process is completed can result in the operating system mis-identifying the snapshot virtual disk. This, in
turn, can result in data loss on the source virtual disk or an inaccessible snapshot.
For details on mapping the snapshot virtual disk to the secondary node, refer to the Dell PowerEdge™ Cluster SE600W
Systems Installation and Troubleshooting Guide on support.dell.com
The destination of a snapshot repository virtual disk is determined based on the free capacity available
in the disk group. A snapshot repository virtual disk requires a minimum 8 MB of free capacity. You can
choose your preferred creation path—simple or advanced—if the disk group of the source virtual disk has
the required amount of free space.
