The process of cleaning a printer by color pairs is as follows:-
1. Install the cleaning cartridges for the paired colors.
2. Go to the maintenance menu on the printer display and then Head cleaning. Scroll down to color pair
you want to clean and check the color pair. If you are cleaning more than color pair then you can also
check the other pairs that require cleaning. Press the right arrow to take you to the next screen and
check the heavy setting to start the cleaning cycle.
3. Repeat 2 above three times and then run a nozzle check print. Inspect the sections of the print for the
colors you are cleaning to see if these sections are completely missing indicating they are printing with
cleaning fluid. If color is still showing in the sections you are cleaning, then repeat heavy cleans
followed by a nozzle check prints until you get no ink showing in the sections of the print for the colors
you are cleaning.
4. Leave the printer to sit overnight with the cleaning cartridges installed.
5. The next day, remove the cleaning cartridges and install ink cartridges. Repeat the same number of
heavy cleans on the same color pairs as you used to get cleaning fluid into the print head, and then
make a nozzle check print to see if the problematic colors are now printing correctly.
6. If the problematic colors have improved with less jets missing then you may have to repeat this whole
process again to remove stubborn clogs. The cleaning cartridges for the P series are good for at least 5
or 6 cleaning uses.
7. If you see no improvement at all after each cleaning then this is an indication that the print head has
electronically failed and will need replacement.
Cleaning cartridges can be kept and re-used if cleaning/flushing is required again in the future.
If you are cleaning out the printer for long term storage using a complete set of cleaning cartridges then the
process of cleaning is the same as above, but you would run heavy cleanings on all colors at once instead of by
color pairs. When you have run enough cleaning cycles to get a nozzle check print that shows no ink printing in
any section of the print, then the printer can be turned off and left indefinitely with cleaning cartridges
installed. When you what to use the printer again, turn it on and replace the cleaning cartridges with ink
cartridges, and run multiple heavy cleaning until the inks has reached the print head and a good nozzle check
print is produced.
If you are cleaning the printer out to change ink types (e.g. regular Epson ink to sublimation inks) the process
is the same as for long term storage above – after producing a completely clear nozzle check print then install
the new type ink cartridges and run multiple heavy cleaning until the inks has reached the print head and a
good nozzle check print is produced.
