RF4CE protocol is a sub-protocol of Zigbee RF technology.
ZigBee RF4CE, created jointly by the ZigBee Alliance and RF4CE
Consortium, is a standardized specification for RF-based remote
controls. It provides a multi-vendor interoperable remote
control solution for consumer electronics featuring a simple,
robust and low-cost communication network for two-way
wireless connectivity. Unlike many of today's RF remote controls
that require the use of an intermediary base station receiver,
ZigBee RF4CE is designed to be built into the consumer
electronics devices themselves. This makes it an ideal technology
for two-way communication between the device and remote.
The ZigBee RF4CE standard provides a simple networking layer
and standard application profiles that can be used to create a
multi-vendor interoperable solution for use within the home.
Characteristics of ZigBee RF4CE include the following:
• Operation in the 2.4GHz frequency band according to IEEE
802.15.4
• Frequency agile solution operating over 3 channels
• Power saving mechanisms for both remote controls and CE
devices
• Discovery mechanisms with full application confirmation
• Pairing mechanisms with full application confirmation
• Security through industry-standard AES-128 scheme
• Security key generation mechanism
• Simple RC control profile for CE products
• Support for both standard and vendor-specific profiles
ZigBee RF4CE uses a star topology, and was designed specifically
for applications requiring simple device-to-device control
communication that do not need the full-featured mesh
networking capabilities offered by protocols such as ZigBee. It
offers lower memory size requirements, which enables lower-
cost implementations. The simple device-to-device topology
provides easy development and testing to enable faster time to
market. Possible uses for ZigBee RF4CE include entertainment
devices, garage door openers, and keyless entry System.
