Problem
The display goes blank by itself
after you have been using it.

Display won't turn on when the
system is turned on.
The display does not close.
The display has bright or dark
spots.
The display is dark when on bat-
tery power.
You have connected an external
monitor and it does not display
any information.
You have connected an external
monitor and it does not come on.

Miscellaneous Problems

Error message is displayed on the
screen during the operation of an
application.
Possible Cause
Power management timeouts
are set for short intervals and
you didn't notice the display
come on and off.
The system may be password-
protected.
A foreign object, such as a
paper clip, is stuck between
the display and keyboard.
If the spots are tiny and few
in number, this is normal for
a large LCD display.
If the spots are numerous or
large enough to interfere
with your operation needs.
Power Management utility
default is set on low to con-
serve power.
Your external monitor is not
properly installed.
Your OS is not setup with the
correct software driver.
The monitor is not compati-
ble with the notebook.
Application software often
has its own set of error mes-
sage displays.
Possible Solutions
Press any button on the keyboard, or move the mouse to restore operation. If
that fails, push the Power/Suspend/Resume button. (The display may be shut off
by Sleep Mode, Auto Suspend or Video Timeout)
Check the status indicator panel to verify that the Security icon is blinking. If it is
blinking, enter your password.
Remove all foreign objects from the keyboard.
This is normal; do nothing.
Display is faulty; contact your support representative.
Press [Fn] + [F7] to increase brightness or double-click on the battery gauge and
adjust Power Control under battery settings.
Reinstall your device. See "External Video Port" on page 78.
Check your device and operating system documentation and activate the proper
driver.
See your monitor documentation and the External Monitor Support portions of
the Specifications section. See "Specifications" on page 124.
See your application manual and help displays screens for more information.
Not all messages are errors some may simply be status.
