UTP – unshielded twisted-pair, twisted
pair wire without shielding. STP –
shielded twisted-pair, twisted-pair wire
with shielding.
Wide Area Network, an interconnected set
of computers and other devices spread
over a large geographic area. (Often used
synonymously with "internet.") A WAN
connection might be the connection of two
office buildings on different sides of the
city, or a connection to the Internet, for
example. Compare, "LAN."
