Installation

P
DANGER
Always switch off the power supply to PLC and other external power sup-
plies before performing any installation and wiring work.
E
WARNING
P Only operate the equipment under the conditions described in the
MELSEC iQ-R Hardware Manual. Do not expose the equipment to dust,
oil mist, corrosive or flammable gases, strong vibrations or impacts,
high temperatures, condensation or damp.
P When installing the equipment take care that no shavings, filings or
wire fragments that could cause short circuits fall into the module. Use
27.8
the supplied cover to seal the ventilation slits during installation.
Remember to remove the cover after installing the unit, otherwise the
controller can overheat during operation.
Choosing an installation location
Install the PLC in a shock-protected enclosure with an approved cover (for
example an electrical switchgear cabinet). The cabinet and its installation must
conform to all applicable local and national regulations.
Ensure that there is at least 30 mm of free space above and below the base unit
between the top and bottom of the switchgear cabinet and the base unit to
allow adequate ventilation and to make it easier to install and remove modules.
The base units must not be installed in a vertical position or on a horizontal
plane because this does not allow sufficient ventilation.
Do not install base units vertically or
on their backs
The base unit must be installed on a flat wall surface to prevent mechanical
stresses.
To prevent ventilation problems, cable conduits installed above the PLC
should not be more than max. 50 mm deep. Allow enough space between the
conduit and the controller to allow easy access to the cables and modules for
later installation and replacement. If the cable conduit is installed below the
PLC, remember to allow enough space for the power supply input cables and
the cables connected to the I/O modules.
Allow at least 100 mm between the PLC and any equipment that generates
strong interference or heat installed in front of the PLC in the switchgear cab-
inet. For example, you could install the other equipment on the inside wall of
the cabinet. If such equipment is installed next to the PLC you must allow
56
a space of at least 50 mm between the PLC and the other equipment.

Installation of the base units
The MELSEC iQ-R base units can be installed directly on a vertical flat surface
(for example the rear wall of a switchgear cabinet) or on a DIN rail.
Direct wall installation
a Drill the holes for the mounting screws. The table below shows the spacing
of the holes for the different units.

b Screw the two top mounting screws into place (e.g. in the cabinet wall) but
do not tighten them yet.
c Position the open right mounting hole (RQmB: bell-shaped hole) on the
right top screw.
d Slip the left mounting hole of the base unit over the other screw.
e Insert the lower screws and tighten all screws to fasten the unit to the wall.
