IGNITION SYSTEM SERVICE

IGNITION SYSTEM OPERATION
OVERVIEW
The electronic ignition (EI) system produces and controls
the high energy secondary spark. This spark ignites the
compressed air / fuel mixture at precisely the correct
time, providing optimal performance, fuel economy, and
control of exhaust emissions. The engine control module
(ECU) primarily collects information from the crankshaft
position sensor (CPS) to control the sequence, dwell,
and timing of the spark.
Each ignition coil has an ignition voltage feed and a
ground circuit. The engine control module (ECU)
supplies a low reference and an ignition coil (IC) circuit.
Each ignition coil contains a solid state driver module.
The ECU will command the IC circuit ON, which allows
the current to flow through the IC circuit. Each ignition
coil contains a solid state driver module. The ECU will
command the IC circuit primary coil windings, When the
ECU commands the IC circuit OFF, this will interrupt
current flow through the primary coil windings. The
magnetic field created by the primary coil windings will
collapse across the secondary coil windings, which
induces a high voltage across the spark plug electrodes.
IGNITION COIL / HT LEAD
REPLACEMENT
NOTE
The engine will misfire if the spark plug wires are
installed incorrectly. The spark plug wires are
marked with PTO and MAG from the factory and
should be installed to the corresponding cylinder
and ignition coil post.
1. Lift the dump box to access the ignition coil.
2. Disconnect the ignition coil harness and remove the
high tension leads from the coil.
3. Remove the fastener retaining the ignition coil and
remove it from the vehicle. If replacing the high
tension lead(s), remove the other end of the lead(s)
from the spark plug.
4. Install the new ignition coil and/or high tension lead
(s).
