Overview
The Main Processing Unit (MPU) is the core of the Quidway
(hereinafter referred to as "NE5000E").
The NE5000E has 22 slots, of which two are for MPUs. The MPU is hot-pluggable. One or two
MPUs are required for each NE5000E. It is recommended that two MPUs be configured to realize
redundancy backup and to improve the system reliability. In addition, each MPU should be
equipped with one or two CF cards (512 MB) and memory cards (1 GB). To improve the overall
performance of the system, you are recommended to configure two CF cards and two memory
cards.
The MPU integrates the clock module, LAN Switch module and Compact Flash (CF) module. It is a
collection of multiple functional modules. The MPU is the core for system control and management.
In addition, as the system clock source and the maintenance management unit, the MPU
implements the functions of the control plane and system maintenance plane. Detailed functions
are given below.
Implement routing protocol:
All routing protocol packets are delivered by the forwarding engine to the MPU for processing.
The MPU updates the routing table entries and downloads the forwarding table from the
forwarding engine. Also, the MPU broadcasts and filters routing packets and downloads
routing policies from the policy server.
Run signaling protocol.
Provide out-band communication channels between the boards in the whole system:
The MPU is integrated with a LAN Switch module, enabling out-band communication between
