Step 2: TURNING YOUR COMPUTER "OFF"
Before attempting to open your machine ensure that your computer is turned
"OFF". Manipulating computer hardware while the computer is "ON" can cause
many problems and result in hardware damage or even personal injury. Consult
your computer's documentation for electrostatic precautions and other warnings.
Step 3: OPENING YOUR COMPUTER
Once you've backed up your data and the computer is powered down, you will
need to physically open the case to gain access to the 5.25" (half height) drive
bays and the connections located on your motherboard. Please consult your
computer's documentation to determine the steps to open your computer's
outer casing.
Step 4: LOCATING YOUR EIDE DEVICES/CONNECTIONS
In most EIDE systems, your motherboard should have two 40-pin connections.
They are usually close in proximity and should be labeled either "EIDE" or "IDE".
To determine if a device is IDE, make sure it has the 40-pin connector and
MASTER/SLAVE/CSEL jumper block. In most cases, your hard disk drive and
your current CD-ROM will be EIDE, so identifying your EIDE connections could
be as simple as following the cables from these devices to where they attach to
the motherboard. Sometimes the label on the device indicates EIDE, ATA or
ATAPI. If these cables do not connect directly to your motherboard, consult your
computer's documentation to verify the type of devices you are using.
If your current CD-ROM drive uses another type of connection you will most likely
need to remove all of that hardware, including any special controller card. Please
refer to your computer's documentation and, if necessary, the system's manufac-
turer. Once removed, follow the instructions for a full hardware installation.
