Glossary
PECM (Power Entry Controller Module)
The primary power control and distribution module for the Maxum II Airbath/Airless Oven
configuration. The PECM also provides temperature control circuitry that is used to monitor
and maintain temperature for the Maxum II oven(s).
PECM-DC (Power Entry Controller Module - Direct Current)
The primary power control and distribution module for the Maxum II Modular Oven
configuration. The PECM-DC receives DC power from the 24 Volt Power Supply and
distributes to other devices in the analyzer. The PECM-DC also provides temperature
monitoring for the Modular Oven heaters.
Purge Control Module
A manifold which distributes purge air to various devices and enclosures in the Maxum II. The
Purge Control Module also contains a pressure switch which can cut power to the air bath
oven heater when flow of purge air is lost.
Purge/Pressurization
This is the process of supplying a protective gas (clean dry air) to an enclosure. This creates
flow out of the enclosure to expel flammable vapors and gases from the enclosure (purge). It
also creates a higher pressure within the enclosure compared to the ambient air outside the
enclosure. In this way it prevents outside flammable vapors and gases from entering the
enclosure (pressurization).
RTD (Resistance Temperature Device)
A sensor used to monitor temperatures within the oven and various other devices used within
the Maxum II.
SYSCON (System Controller Module)
The primary processor and memory module for some versions of the Maxum II. Two primary
versions of SYSCON exist, the original SYSCON+, and the next generation SYSCON2.
Temperature Class (T-Rating)
A classification system which identifies the maximum allowable surface temperature for
devices within a location. The temperature class takes into account the types of flammable
gases that may be present (and the temperatures at which these gases will ignite).
Temperature Programming
The process of increasing oven temperature incrementally in order to reduce the time needed
to separate a sample using a chromatograph. In the Maxum II, a variant of the air bath oven
may be used to employ temperature programming.
