Ingredients of Detergents
•
Surfactants – Lower the surface tension of water,
making dirt and soil more water soluble. Surfactants
disperse dirt that normally does not dissolve in water.

Oxidizing Agents – Act as bleaches.
•
Enzymes – Proteins that at as catalysts to remove
stains.
•
Water Softening Agents – Soften the water by
removing certain ions, making it easier for detergents
to bind with fats.
•
Polymers – Used in detergents to bond the
ingredients and prevent soils from re-depositing on
fabrics
•
Perfumes – Add fragrance to fabrics
•
Optical Brighteners – "Dyes" to enhance color
perception
