Digging a Straight Wall
1. Strip the topsoil off the ground within the boundaries
marked for a straight hole or grave.
2. Remove as much material within the boundaries as
possible using the usual digging techniques.
3. Make a vertical far wall by crowding out the bucket
while forcing it down with the boom.
4. Curl the bucket to ensure that the bottom of the bucket
remains vertical when you make the downward cut.
5. Make a vertical near wall by raising the boom while
crowding it in.
Note: Curl the bucket inward to keep the cutting edge
horizontal with the near wall as you raise the bucket
and remove the soil.
Note: When you are finishing a straight wall in sandy
soil, use a platform under the rear tires and stabilizers
to distribute the weight of the backhoe over a larger
area to reduce the chance of a cave-in.
