DGS-6600 Layer 3 Chassis Ethernet Managed Switch Hardware Installation Guide

Connecting the External Interface Cables

Connecting External Interface Cable Precautions

• Ensure that you correctly distinguish between single-mode and multi-mode fibers and interfaces.
• Avoid small radius bends at the connector.

Simple External Interface Cable Connection Steps

1. Connect the RJ45 connector of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of the Switch's management module
and insert the other end to the Local LAN (that your PC/Notebook or control element has access to) or
directly to your PC/Notebook or control terminal.
- or -
Connect the standard DB9 end of the serial cable to the RS-232 serial port of the Switch's management
module and the other end to either a Serial Port Server (that your PC/Notebook or control element has
access to) or directly to the PC/Notebook or control terminal.
2. Insert either the single-mode or multi-mode fiber cable into the corresponding fiber-optic interface. Be sure
to identify the RX/TX ends of the fiber optic cable.
3. Insert the twisted-pair cable with the RJ45 connector into the corresponding RJ45 interface. Be sure to
identify whether the cable type is cross-over or straight-through.
4. Connect the twisted-pair and fiber-optic cables to each board in the correct sequence.

Cable Management

Cable Management Precautions

• When binding and running fiber-optic cabling ensure that bends are kept to a minimum. Ensure that any
bends have a large radius.
• Avoid binding fiber-optic and twisted-pair cabling too tightly. Binding fiber-optic cables too tightly may
break the glass inside and cause transmission problems. Binding twisted-pair cables too tightly may
negatively impact the twisted-pair cable's performance.

Simple Cable Management Steps

1. Ensure that cables are patched in a way where they can easily connect to the required line card. Secure any
loose sections of the fiber-optic and twisted-pair cabling neatly in the cabling management system.
2. Use the cabling management system to secure the fiber-optic and twisted-pair cabling.
3. Try to bind the power cables as straight as possible along the bottom of the cabinet..
