Troubleshooting

IMPORTANT
For technical help, you must contact the Customer Service center in the country where you bought the
scanner. Calls must be made from within that country. For more information, see For customer service
on page 123.
If you think there is a problem with your scanner, check the chart below and follow the suggestions.
You can correct most problems yourself. If you need additional help, visit the Brother Solutions Center at
http://support.brother.com, click FAQs & Troubleshooting, and then navigate to your Model Name.
Using non-Brother supplies may affect scan quality, hardware performance and product reliability.

Error and maintenance messages

Messages displayed on LCD
Error message
ADF cover open
Document misfeed
Document Jam/too Long
Cause
ADF cover is open.
After pressing Scan, the paper
detect sensor is inactive for a certain
time.
The Document Guides are not set
to the correct document size.
The settings are not suitable for
your document.
Paper dust has accumulated on
the surface of the Pick-up Roller
or Feed Roller.
Action
Close the ADF cover.
Align the edges of the pages and set
your document correctly, then try
again.
Clear the document jam (see
Document jam on page 109) and
then do the following:
Adjust the Document Guides to fit
the width of the document. When
Scan Size is set to Auto and you
are scanning a document that
contains multiple page sizes,
insert narrow pages straight and
as close to the center of the
machine as possible. If the
document will not be fed straight,
use Continuous Scanning.
Confirm the settings. See the
IMPORTANT section on
page 110.
Clean the rollers. See Clean the
inside of your scanner on
page 92.
