Configuring the Software

After you install the switch in a rack and power it up, perform the initial software configuration using the
command-line interface or Bare Metal Provisioning (BMP) to connect to the network. This chapter
describes how to configure the C9010 using the CLI.
BMP allows the C9010 to receive a Dell Networking OS image and startup configuration file with initial
software settings, including IP address, from a DHCP server. For more information about BMP, refer to
the Dell Networking Open Automation Guide: Configuration and Command Line Reference. To connect
a BMP-enabled switch to a network so that it can search the network for a DHCP server, see
the Switch to the
Network.
To use the CLI to configure the system, follow these steps:
1.
Connect a console terminal to the RJ-45/RS-232 or USB-B console port to enter the initial
configuration information.
2.
Configure the enable password.
3.
Configure a host name.
4.
Configure layer 2 (data Link) mode.
5.
Configure the management port IP address.
6.
Configure a management route.
7.
Configure a username and password.
8.
Create a port-based VLAN.
9.
Assign interfaces to a VLAN.
10. Assign an IP address to a VLAN.
11. Connect the system to the network.
For complete information about how to configure and monitor your system, refer to the Dell Networking
Configuration Guide for the C9000 Series. For the latest documentation and firmware updates, refer to

C9010 Console Ports

To perform initial software configuration, you must connect an external console to the C9010 switch.
The C9010 RPM provides two types of console interfaces: RJ45 and USB-B.
The RJ45 and USB-B console ports are located on the left side of the RPM as you face the chassis.
