Notes on using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

5.1.1 About the message caused by power consumption control in Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 6
The following messages may be logged to "syslog", but these do not indicate that failures have occurred in the
server.
These messages indicate that the power consumption of a CPU blade has reached the upper limit value for
ceiling control.
The power consumption in the entire system is controlled by the EM card installed in the blade enclosure, and
the EM card controls the upper limit values of the CPU blades for ceiling control dynamically according to the
power consumption of each CPU blade.
When the power consumption of a CPU blade has reached the upper limit value, the value is changed
automatically by optimally allocating the power across the CPU blades, therefore, there will be no impact in the
operation.
Please refer to the user's guide of the EM card for setting the power consumption control on the EM card.
■ Sample Message 1
kernel: CPU6: Core power limit notification (total events = 196670)
kernel: CPU21: Package power limit notification (total events = 196453)
kernel: CPU17: Core power limit normal
kernel: CPU23: Package power limit normal
mcelog: Processor 3 below trip temperature. Throttling disabled
These messages will be logged as many times as the number of logical CPU.
■ Sample Message 2
[Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
You can distinguish between the messages for failures and for power capping by checking the Machine Check
Events (MCE) logs (in /var/log/mcelog).
If a message that is similar to the following and that contains "THERMAL EVENT" is repeatedly logged in 8
lines in /var/log/mcelog at around the time (within 5 minutes) when the message containing "Hardware Error" is
Tips
If you are using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, see (5.1 Notes on using Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 6).
