serial interface
An interface that communicates information one bit at a time.
serial printer
A printer with a serial interface.
SIR
Serial Infrared, an infrared technology that sends data at 2.4 Mbit/second
(2,400,000 bits per second).
SO-DIMM
Small outline dual-inline memory module. A small circuit board that holds
memory chips. A dual in-line memory module (DIMM) has a 64-bit path.
software
Programs that run on a computer such as operating systems, word
processors, and spreadsheets.
SuperDisk
A high capacity diskette drive that uses the laser-servo technology to read
from and write to specially designed 120-MB diskettes. The SuperDisk is
backward compatible and reads 1.44-MB and 720-MB diskettes.
Suspend mode
A state of power management that puts the system to "sleep." Suspend
mode shuts down all devices in the system while retaining data and system
status.
SVGA
Super Video Graphics Array. Graphics technology that supports up to 256
colors and a graphics resolution of 800 by 600 pixels.
system board
The main printed circuit board inside the system unit into which other
boards and major chip components, such as the system microprocessor, are
connected.
