Basic Troubleshooting

Solving System Problems
This section provides a guide to identify a problem and locate its source. In general, a lot of problems can
be linked to cables that are not properly connected.
Warning:
Should you have to open the system cover to solve a hardware related problem, then
please turn off the system power, the power to any peripheral devices and disconnect all power
cords. For notebook computers, also remove the battery pack. Otherwise, you could permanently
damage the system or peripheral device(s).
If the system was running, any component installed is hot. To avoid the possibility of a burn, let
the components cool (at least 10 minutes) before working inside the system.
The following subsections provide troubleshooting checklists when the system does not power up at all,
for problems that occur at initial system start-up, when you run new application software, after installing
new hardware devices, and after the system hardware and software have been running correctly.
Note:

System Does Not Power Up at All
The power button has been pressed but the power status LED does not light.
Verify that the outlet you have the computer plugged into has power. You can do this with a lamp or
with an outlet tester available at most hardware stores.
Check the connection between the computer and the power cord. For notebook computers, also check
the connection between the power cord and the AC adapter.
If the computer is plugged into a UPS unit, check to see that the UPS unit is working properly by
plugging the computer directly into the power outlet.
If your notebook computer is powered using the battery, the latter is probably fully discharged. Insert a
charged battery or connect the AC adapter.
Your system's power supply may have entered a security mode due to a power fluctuation (after a
storm or a micro power shortage).
Remove the power cord from your system (for notebook computers, do not forget to also remove the
battery).
Press the power button during approximately 30 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord (for notebook computers, you can also reinstall the battery).
Press the power button again to start the computer.
Problems at Initial System Start-up
Problems that occur at initial system start-up are often caused by incorrect installation of components or
incorrect configuration. The power button has been pressed, the power status LED is lit, but the screen is
blank or the computer turns off immediately.
