11. Remove the pinion coupler cover (2WD units).
12.Remove the nut, spacer, pinion coupler, and seal
(Fig. 32).
13.Position the housing assembly on a suitable press.
Place a 1/8 inch (3 mm) piece of steel or a screwdriver
blade under the edge of the spur gear. This will prevent
the spur gear from cocking and possibly cracking the
housing (Fig. 33).
When the pinion is close to being pressed completely
out of the bearing, reach under the housing and catch
the pinion in your hand to prevent any damage to the pin-
ion.
14.Remove the outer pinion bearing cone, bearing
shim, and the bearing spacer from the housing (Fig. 32).
15.Removing the drive pinion releases the spur gear,
spacer, and outer pinion bearing for removal (Fig. 34).
If unit was equipped with a pinion coupler for 4WD (no
expansion plug), remove oil seal from housing (Fig. 4).
