Materials needed:
Column cutter (5181-8836)
Ferrules
Flashlight
Gloves, clean
Interface column nut (05988-20066)
Safety glasses
Wrench, open-end, 1/4-inch × 5/16-inch (8710-0510)
Note:
This procedure is recommended for optimal sensitivity performance.
1 Condition the column (page 24).
2 Vent the MSD (page 52) and open the vacuum manifold (page 54).
Be sure you can see the end of the GC/MSD interface.
3 Slide an interface nut and ferrule onto the free end of the GC column.
4 Slide the column into the GC/MSD interface until you can pull it out
through the vacuum manifold.
5 Break 1 cm off the end of the column (page 20).
Do not let any column fragments fall into the vacuum manifold. They could dam-
age the turbo pump.
6 Clean the outside of the free end of the column with a lint-free cloth
moistened with methanol.
7 Adjust the column so it projects 1 to 2 mm past the end of the GC/MSD
interface.
8 Hand tighten the nut.
Make sure the position of the column does not change as you tighten the nut.
