General IED application

The SAM600-IO Switchgear Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is used for control and
monitoring of primary switchgear in power networks. Typically, one IED is used for the control
of all primary switchgear, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors and earth switches in any
type of switchgear arrangement and it is suitable for all voltage levels.
IED supports IEC 61850-8-1 Ed1 or IEC 61850-8-1 Ed 2 communication for station bus and
process bus. GOOSE messaging is used between IED and control, and protection IEDs for
providing status information of the primary apparatus, as well as subscribing to protection
trip and open/ close operations from the control IEDs. For monitoring purposes, MMS
communication through the station bus is also supported.
Built-in redundant communication features such as PRP and HSR, and up to six communication
ports allow to embed the IED in a broad range of communication architectures. Support for
IEC/IEEE 61850-9-3 time synchronization enables the integration of the device into state-of-
the-art IEC 61850 station and process bus architectures.
Control operations of the primary switchgear is performed from remote (SCADA/Station) via
bay control IEDs through IEC 61850-8-1 Ed1 or Ed2. Cyber security measures are implemented
to secure safe autonomous operation of the control functions even if simultaneous cyber
attacks occur. One IED can be used for interfacing the primary switchgear of a single bay, or it
can be used (in a 1/1 19" form factor) to interface multiple bays.
Disturbance recording is available to allow independent post-fault analysis after primary
disturbances in case of a failure in the protection system.
Logic is prepared with a graphical tool. The advanced logic capability allows special
applications such as automatic opening of disconnectors in multi-breaker arrangements,
closing of breaker rings, load transfer logics and so on. The graphical configuration tool
ensures simple and fast testing and commissioning.
Forcing of binary inputs and outputs is a convenient way to test wiring in substations as well
as testing configuration logic in the IEDs. It means that all binary inputs and outputs on the
IED modules (BOM, BIM, IOM and SOM) can be forced to arbitrary values.
Central Account Management is an authentication infrastructure that offers a secure solution
for enforcing access control to IED and other systems within a substation. This incorporates
management of user accounts, roles and certificates and the distribution of such, a procedure
completely transparent to the user.
Flexible Product Naming allows the customer to use an IED vendor independent IEC 61850
model of the IED. This customer model will be used as the IEC 61850 data model, but all other
aspects of the IED will remain unchanged (e.g., names in the tools). This offers significant
flexibility to adapt the IED to the customers' system and standard solution.
SAM600-IO LHMI service kit which can be connected to the IED is available as accessory for
maintenance and service operations.
The IED ships with an empty configuration at delivery. With PCM600 Tool, required logic for
interfacing primary switchgear objects, adjusting function parameters, and mapping binary
I/O to signals are steps which need to be performed by the customer.
The SAM600-IO basic delivery includes one binary input module and one binary output module,
which is sufficient for interfacing a single circuit breaker. The SAM600-IO is available in two
