Drives
with
serial
number
prefix
2451A
were
shipped
with
winchester
mechanisms
which
can
exhibit
two
known
failure
modes.
1:
An
accelerator
which
was
used
to
speed
curing
time
of
an
adhesive
has
been
found
to
"outgas"
over
time
and
leave
deposits
on
the
media
which
can
cause
a
"stiction""
problem.
(head
sticks
to
the
media)
The
drive
will
either
time-out
or
the head will
be damaged
or broken
off.
2:
One
of
the
interconnect
wires
between
spindle
motor
coils
may
short
to
a
mounting
screw
on
these
units,
causing
overheating
and
eventually
an
open
circuit.
Solution
Units
with
serial
number
prefix
2520A
and
higher
have
winchester
drives
which
did not
use
the
accelerator
and
the
routing
of
the
motor
wiring
has
been
modified
to
ensure
that
no
possibility
of
a
short
exists.
The
exchange
part
number
of
drives
which
will
not
have
these
problems
is being
changed
to 09153-69111.
Return
all
service
inventory
of
Drive
PN09153-69101
and
reorder
PN09]53-69111.
Approximately
35 service
assemblies
and
less
than
150 customer
units
were
shipped
which
may
exhibit
these
problems.
