Any named, ordered collection of information
file
stored on a disk.
firmware
Programs stored permanently in read-only
memory (ROM) or flash-ROM. Such programs are built
into the printer at the factory. They can be executed at
any time, but usually cannot be modified or erased from
memory. See also: ROM, flash-ROM.
fixed space font
Any typeface in which the width of
characters is the same for all characters. See also:
proportional typeface, spacing.
Read-only memory on the printer that can
flash-ROM
be upgraded using special procedures. During day-to-
day use, its contents can be read but not changed. See

font
A single character set within a typeface that has a
specific, spacing, point size, style, and weight.
font cache
Storage in RAM of the bitmapped fonts
developed by the Silentwriter Model 1760/1765 from
outline fonts.
fuser cartridge
The fuser cartridge is the mechanism in
your printer that applies heat and pressure to
permanently fix the toner image onto the paper. Replace
the fuser cartridge when the
REPLACE FUSER
appears on the operator panel display. You should also
replace the transfer roller at the same time.

Graphics Mode
you use to specify how graphic images in your
document are processed—as raster images or using HP-

you use to specify the resolution for graphic images in

downloaded PostScript fonts, forms, logos, and macros.

that enables you to install a compatible hard disk drive
into the Silentwriter 1760/1765.
hex dump
A printer mode in which all data is output
in hexadecimal format.
hot-key
A combination of keys on your computer
keyboard that you press at the same time to execute a
command or launch an application.
HP-GL/2
A printer programming language for
graphics developed by Hewlett-Packard.
icon
A small graphic image that is a placeholder for a
message
program, file, or command. Often you select the icon to
access the item it represents.
indicator lights
panel that communicate the current printer status.
Intellifont
An outline font format for typefaces
developed by Agfa for use with PCL.
internal font
Jam Recovery
printer to continue printing a job without loss of data
after a jam has been cleared.
