Replacing the Fuser Cartridge and
Transfer Roller
The fuser unit is the mechanism in your printer that
applies heat and pressure to permanently fix the toner
image onto the paper. Replace the fuser cartridge when
the message appears on the operator
REPLACE FUSER
panel display.
When you replace the fuser cartridge, you should also
replace the transfer roller (instructions on page 7-10).
The fuser cartridge and transfer roller are sold together
in the Fuser Kit (NEC part # 20-119). See page 9-4 for
ordering information.

Replacing the Fuser Cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the fuser cartridge, as
illustrated on the next page.
1. Turn off the printer power and unplug the power
cord from the printer and wall outlet.
2. Wait 45 minutes for the fuser to cool down before
continuing.
WARNING!
The fusing area is extremely hot.
Always wait a full 45 minutes for the fusing area to cool
down.
3. Press the lever and open the rear cover (A).
4. Remove the duplex unit if it is installed (see
Chapter 2 of the Easy Printer Setup Guide for
instructions).
WARNING!
Be careful when removing the duplex
unit. The small motor at the end of the unit may be hot.

5. Remove the two screws that are located at both ends
of the fuser cartridge (B).
6. Hold on to the two padded orange handles and
slide the fuser cartridge out from the printer (C).
7. Unpack a new fuser cartridge
8. Position the fuser cartridge as shown (D), and slide
the fuser into the printer.
9. Make sure the two screw holes on the fuser
cartridge line up with the screw holes on the printer.
10. Reinstall the two screws.
11. Reinstall the duplex unit if necessary.
12. Close the rear cover (E).
13. Plug the power cord into the printer and wall
outlets and turn on the power.

Resetting the Fuser Alarm

After you replace the fuser cartridge and the transfer
roller (see page 7-10), you must reset the fuser alarm on
the printer operator panel. Follow these steps.
1. Press Online.

2. Press Menu.
