Some Epson printers can produce Near Letter Quality (NLQ)
print. This is a slower way of printing but produces output which is
close in quality to that of a daisy-wheel printer. If your printer has this
feature, either built-in or as an optional board, you can turn it on using
the command:
<CTRL>·I 33F
This is similar to the command for selecting international character
sets, which is described elsewhere. However, to cancel NLQ printing
you have to use the
<CTRL>-1 nQ command, as described below. There
may be certain limitations on which other print modes can be
combined with NLQ: for instance, it is not possible to combine NLQ
with condensed printing. You should consult your printer or interface
manual for details.

The #
8133 card has a command which allows you to alter the
density of a graphic screen dump. The same command also allows the
character size (pitch) to be set. Remember that if you use this
command to alter the density before carrying out a screen dump, the
text size will be set differently when the screen dump is over. Density
28
is set by the command:
<CTRL>-lnQ
where
n
is a number between O and 7.
The table below shows the progressive effect of the available
density settings on Epson printers, but note that some printers such as
the MX and RX series do not have a proportional space mode.
The examples at the right of the table show the style of print which
is produced by each command. Pica characters have a pitch of 10
characters per inch, and are the default draft mode characters on the
printer; Elite characters have a pitch of 12 characters per inch.
Proportional spacing means that narrow characters such as the letter
i
are allowed less space than wide characters such as m or
w.
The
examples in the table cover a selection of wide and narrow characters
to make clear the effect of the various commands.

This command does not control the way NLQ characters are
printed. If you use the
<CTRL>-1 nQ command after setting NLQ mode
with
<CTRL>-l 33F, NLQ printing will be cancelled and the style
given in the
<CTRL>-1 nQ command will be set up. This means that
you can use
<CTRL>-1 OQ to cancel NLQ printing, and reselect the
default draft Pica style.
Proportional characters are not compatible with condensed
characters.
