Installing a PCI Add-In Board in a Hot-Plug Slot

Windows 2000 enables replacing and adding of a hot-plug PCI board while the
server is in operation. Only the INTEL 100BASE-TX LAN board and the
INTEL 1000BASE-T LAN board support the hot-plug PCI feature.
The following sections describe PCI hot-plug functionality and include:
!
Installing a hot-plug PCI board while the server is in operation.
!
Removing a hot-plug PCI board while the server is in operation.

Important Considerations

Consider the following guidelines when installing, replacing and removing hot-
plug PCI boards.
!
Without a specific driver, the Windows 2000 operating system does not
support hot-plug PCI board installation and removal. If your server
includes the Windows 2000 factory hot-load, the hot-plug PCI driver is
already included.
!
Before removing a PCI board, be sure to terminate the driver of the slot
containing the PCI board. Failure to do so may cause the system to fail.
See Removing a Hot-Plug PCI Board.
!
Use the BIOS Setup utility to set the following parameters before
executing the PCI hot- plug function:
!
PCI hot-plug board parameters are applied to the PCI slot by the system
after installing the board and rebooting the system.
Select [Advanced]>[PCI Configuration]>[Hot-plug PCI
Control]>[Reserving memory space for PHP]. Select the memory
space required for the installed board. Refer to the documentation
received with the board.
If the "Hot-plug PCI Master Control" on the [Advanced] menu is set
to "Enabled" and "Hot-plug PCI Allocation Level" is set to other than
"Disabled," the memory capacity appears to be less than the actually
installed memory capacity.
Select [Advanced]>[PCI Configuration]>[Hot-plug PCI
Control]>[Empty Bus Default Speed]. Select the clock speed for
installed board. Set the clock speed, referring to the descriptions in
Table 4-1. If the hot-plug PCI board operates at a different clock
speed than the speed set using the BIOS setup utility, the PCI slot
fault lamp illuminates indicating the hot-plug PCI board will not
operate correctly. However, restarting the system allows BIOS to
ignore the setting value and automatically operate the system with the
optimum setting.
