Glossary

AddOn
An AddOn is an optional module that extends existing hardware or software. The existing
libraries of the relevant application are used for this purpose and also expanded by new
functions. To use a simple analogy, an AddOn is installed "backpack style" on top of the main
application and can be uninstalled at any time without impairing the proper functioning of the
main application.
In this document, the term "AddOn" is used to refer to the "sway control system".
Boom
Boom refers to the jib of the crane.
Crane control system
The crane control system refers to the higher-level control system (PLC).
The overall data exchange with the sway control (except for communication with the camera
measuring system) is performed via PROFIBUS/PROFINET with the crane control system.
Direction signals
Collective term for the status bits TRAVEL_FW, TRAVEL_BW, TRAVEL_UP, TRAVEL_DN.
Effective pendulum length
The effective pendulum length is the pendulum length which corresponds with that of a physical
pendulum.
The oscillation period for the pendulum length is T = 2 · π · √(l : g).
This effective pendulum length is established through oscillation tests and differs from the
pendulum length, which is established through measurement with a tape measure, as the
pendulum provided through the actual crane construction does not meet the conditions present
for a physical pendulum.
The effective pendulum length is one of the fundamental input variables for the control
algorithm for the sway control.
Gantry
Gantry refers to the travel mechanism of the crane.
Gantry crane
Gantry crane refers to a portal crane.
