Application
The catenary distance protection (ZRCPDIS) function is applicable for railway supply systems. It is
used as a distance protection for catenary feeders that supply the moving locomotive through a
pantograph. It can also be used as simplified distance protection for AT-catenary system. The
function has five independent zones and one measurement loop per zone.
ZRCPDIS application function can be used in 16.7 Hz, 50 Hz and 60 Hz railway supply systems.
The IED allows up to six independent setting groups in order to cover different operating condition of
the traction feeder such as normal arrangement, alternate feeding, bypass, etc. The setting group
can be changed remotely via communication link or via binary inputs.
7.3.3
Setting guidelines
The settings for the distance protection function ZRCPDIS are done in primary ohms. The instrument
transformer ratio set for the analog input card is used to automatically convert the measured
secondary analog signals into primary values used in the distance protection function ZRCPDIS.
Validate the given default values for each application and adopt the appropriate setting values.
The parameters for ZRCPDIS function are set via the local HMI or PCM600.
The common base IED values for primary current (IBase), primary voltage (UBase) and primary
power (SBase) are set in the global base values for settings function GBASVAL.
7.3.3.1
General settings (common for all zones)
GlobalBaseSel: Selects the global base value group used by the function to define IBase, UBase and
SBase as applicable.
Operation: To set the operation of distance protection function ZRCPDIS to On/Off.
CharAng: To set the distance protection characteristic angle. The default value is 81.0 deg.
IMinOp: To set the minimum operating current for distance protection in % of IB. The distance
protection calculates the impedance if minimum current exceeds. The default setting is 10.0% of IB.
RLd: To set the resistive reach limit of load discrimination characteristic. This setting can be
calculated according to equation:

ArgLd: To set the load angle, that determines the load impedance area of load discrimination
characteristic. Set the parameter to the maximum possible load angle at a maximum possible load.
The default value is set at 30 degrees.
