Application of traction supply systems
Traction supply system supplies electrical power to the electric locomotive. AC electrification is used
for traction systems which spans for longer distances. Power collection is performed via the
overhead catenary conductor.
There are two types of feeding systems in AC electrification:
Single phase feeding system
Auto transformer feeding system

Single phase feeding system
Single phase feeding system is a single phase system. The locomotive collects power from the
catenary and the return current flows back to the source through the rail and return conductor.
Generally, single traction transformer feeds 2-4 tracks in parallel. That is, the load current is shared
by the parallel catenary conductors. Hence, the impedance upto the load is reduced and therefore
the voltage is maintained (as the voltage drop reduces). The classical feeding system is always
operated radially. Example of classical single phase feeding and paralleling post is shown in Figure
165.

In this system, booster transformers are employed to force the return current to flow through return
conductor instead of the rail. Thus, interference with the communication systems reduces. Example
of classical single phase feeding with booster transformer is shown in Figure 166.
