CHAPTER 10 SOFTWARE RAID1

10.1 Overview of the Software RAID1

10.1.1 What Is the Software RAID1

This chapter describes how to manage the software RAID1 feature of the B and T models.
In this chapter, this equipment denotes the B or T model. Note that the drives used by this
equipment are hereinafter referred to as drives because they might be HDDs or SSDs depending
on the model. In addition, in this chapter, software RAID1 is hereinafter abbreviated to RAID1.
The screen images shown in this chapter are for the B model, but the contents are basically
the same for the T model. Note that the model, capacity, and other information for the drive
might differ from your actual display.
● Although this Equipment featuring RAID1 is more reliable than general
systems, it is still prone to the loss of data in the drives. Not only a machine
failure but also an unexpected power failure or an operation error may cause
data to be lost for good. To prevent such loss of data, implement scheduled
data backup in daily operation. Also, protect the power source from
undesirable interruptions by such means as UPS.
● This Equipment is evaluated based on the specific drive models authorized by
the Manufacturer. Replace only with specific drive models authorized by the
Manufacturer. Otherwise, the existing data in the drive may be lost. Also,
always observe the recommended replacement interval for drives (Refer to
"APPENDIX HANDLING REPLACEABLE COMPONENTS").
● Since each Equipment has its own RAID1 configuration information (e.g., serial
number), you cannot swap drives even between two units of this Equipment.
Failure to heed this instruction might result in unexpected operation because of
a problem such as inconsistent configuration information. If you own multiple
units of this Equipment, manage use and inventory of drives so that they are
not inadvertently mixed.
● Do not use a used drive as a replacement drive, regardless of the model.
Failure to heed this instruction might result in the equipment not operating
normally or data in the drive being lost due to inconsistent configuration
information.
● Use a new drive (unused drive) or an initialized drive as a replacement drive
(see "10.6.7 Drive Initialization Function").
● Maintenance of a RAID1 system requires a high level of expertise. Should any
mistakes be made during the work, the data stored on the drives may be lost.
● The drives in drive bay 1 and drive bay 2 must have the same capacity. Do not
install drives with different capacities.
