Alternative approaches

The installation method described in detail in this chapter assumes that the link is
installed using the Installation Wizard, then configured using several different
configuration pages, and finally connected to the data network.
Several alternative approaches are possible. Select the basic approach or the
alternative approach that best matches business processes of the operator.

Update capabilities before installation

Security and capacity capabilities may be updated before installation of the link.
Enhanced capabilities are bound to a MAC address. If security or capacity
upgrades are activated for a CMU before installation then care must be exercised
to deploy that CMU at the correct point in the network.

Configure security before installation

Security may be configured before installation of the link. This is a useful option
where security is administered by a specialist member of the operator's
organization, or where passwords and keys must not be distributed outside some
controlled or secure area.
Once keys are configured, the CMUs must be deployed as a pair.

LAN configuration before installation

The LAN attributes (IP interface, VLAN membership, and management mode) may
be configured before installation. This approach minimizes the amount of work that
must be done on site.
If LAN attributes are preconfigured, the installation must be done using a
connection to a remote network management system, or the locally attached PC
must have IP and Ethernet properties that are compatible with the configured
CMU.
