12 Volt Battery Service

The battery is the heart of the electrical system. With
regular and proper service, battery life can be extended.
Additionally, battery and electrical component failure
can be prevented.
CAUTION
When working with batteries, use extreme cau-
tion to avoid splashing or spilling electrolyte.
Electrolyte can destroy clothing and burn skin or
eyes. Always wear safety goggles and a face
shield when working with batteries.

Battery Removal (Fig. 95 or 96)
IMPORTANT: Be careful to not damage terminal
posts or cable connectors when removing the bat-
tery cables.
1. Park machine on level surface, lower cutting units,
stop engine, apply parking brake and remove key from
ignition switch.
2. Disconnect the negative cable (--) from the battery
first to prevent short circuiting the battery, other compo-
nents or the operators hands. Then disconnect the posi-
tive (+) cable.
3. Remove fasteners and retainer components that se-
cure battery to frame.
4. Make sure that the battery filler caps are on tightly.
5. Remove battery from the battery compartment and
move battery to a service area. This will minimize pos-
sible battery damage and allow better access for battery
inspection and service.
