c. Install the wire clamps behind the bolts (A,

d. Apply Yamaha Bond 1215 or an equivalent
sealant to the threads of the two indicated

in.-lb.).
f. Install the oil filter and add engine oil as de-
scribed in Chapter Three. Install a new O-ring

Inspection
1. Inspect the clutch cover for cracks or other signs
of damage.
2. Closely inspect the crankshaft oil seal (A, Fig-
ure 5) in the clutch cover.
CAUTION
The crankshaft oil seal is a critical
part of the oil system. It seals the
crankshaft and facilitates main oil de
livery. When in doubt, replace this
seal.
3. If necessary, remove the oil seal retainer (B, Fig-
ure 5) for a closer inspection. Replace the oil seal
(Figure 6) if there is any damage or if the seal is be-
coming brittle.
4. Replace the seal as follows:
a. If still installed, remove the oil seal retainer
(B, Figure 5).
b. Pry the crankshaft oil seal (Figure 6) from the
clutch cover.
c. Lubricate a new seal with lithium soap
grease. Position the seal so the manufac-
turer's marks face out, and drive the seal into
the cover with a driver or socket that matches
the outside diameter of the seal.
d. Install the oil seal retainer (B, Figure 5) so its
concave side faces the oil seal.
e. Apply a medium-strength threadlocking
compound to the threads of the retainer bolts,
and tighten them securely.
CLUTCH
The Yamaha clutch holding tool (part No.
YM-91042 or 90890-04086), a Grabbit, or an
