the relay; connect the negative battery terminal to
the blue terminal (B).
6. Connect the ohmmeter positive test lead to the
red (C, Figure 52) terminal in the relay; connect the
negative test lead to the black terminal (D). The re-
lay should have continuity.
7. Replace the starter relay if it fails this test.
LIGHTING SYSTEM
The lighting system consists of the headlight,
taillight, high beam indicator light, meter illumina-
tion lights, and front turn signal/position light. If
there is trouble with any of these lights, check the
affected bulb first. Replacement bulbs are listed in
Table 2. If the bulb is good, follow the lighting
system troubleshooting procedures listed in Chap-
ter Two.
HEADLIGHT

Headlight Bulb Replacement

WARNING
If the headlight has just burned out or
just has just been turned off, the bulb
will be hot. Do not touch the bulb un
til it cools off.
CAUTION
All models are equipped with a
quartz halogen bulb. Do not touch
the bulb glass with your fingers be
cause traces of oil on the bulb will
drastically reduce the life of the bulb.
Clean any traces of oil from the bulb
with a cloth moistened in alcohol or
lacquer thinner.
1. Remove the mounting screw (Figure 53) on ei-
ther side of the headlight housing and lower the lens
assembly from the housing.
2. Disconnect the headlight connector (A, Figure
54) from the bulb and remove the lens assembly.
3. Remove the boot (Figure 55) from the lens as-
sembly.
4A. On 1999-2000 XVS1100 models and 2000-on
XVS1100A models, turn the headlight bulb holder
counterclockwise, remove the bulb holder and pull
the bulb from the lens assembly.

4B. On 2001-on XVS1100 models, release the se-
curing clip (Figure 56), and remove the bulb (Fig-
ure 57) from the lens assembly.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Install the bulb and make sure the projections
on the bulb engage the slots (Figure 58) in the
lens assembly.
b. Make sure the electrical connector is free of
corrosion and is tightly pushed onto the bulb
terminals.
