the next step. Excess grease could
contaminate the brake pads. Do not
get any grease on the brake pads.
11A. On 1999-2000 XVS1100 models, perform
the following:
a. Lubricate the caliper pin (A, Figure 7) with
lithium soap grease.
b. Insert the caliper pin into the pivot (B, Figure
8) in the pad holder.
c. Rotate the caliper and lower it onto the pad
holder.
d. Lubricate the retaining bolt (A, Figure 6)
with lithium soap grease and install it in the
caliper. Torque the retaining bolt to 23 N•m
(17 ft.-lb.).
WARNING
Use just enough grease to lubricate
the retaining bolts in the next step. Ex
cess grease could contaminate the
brake pads. Do not get any grease on
the brake pads.
11B. On 2001-on XVS1100 models and all
XVS1100A models, perform the following:
a. Lower the caliper onto the pad holder.
b. Lubricate the retaining bolts with lithium
soap grease.
c. Install the retaining bolts (A and B, Figure 6)
and secure the caliper to the pad holder.
d. Torque the retaining bolts to 27 N•m (20
ft.-lb.).
12. Reinstall the brake hose holder. Torque the
brake hose holder bolt (Figure 5) to 10 N•m (89
in.-lb.).
13. Repeat Steps 2-12 to replace the pads in the op-
posite front caliper.
14. Support the motorcycle with the front wheel off
the ground. Spin the wheel and pump the brake le-
ver until the pads are seated against the disc.
WARNING
Use brake fluid clearly marked DOT 4
from a sealed container. Other types
may vaporize and cause brake failure.
Always use the same brand of brake
fluid. Do not intermix brake fluids.
Many brands are not compatible with
one another.
15. Refill the master cylinder reservoir, if neces-
sary, to maintain the correct fluid level. Install the
diaphragm and top cover. Tighten the cover screws
securely.
WARNING
Do not ride the motorcycle until you
are sure the brakes are operating cor
rectly with full hydraulic advantage.
If necessary, bleed the brake as de
scribed in this chapter.
16. Test ride the motorcycle slowly at first to make
sure the brakes are operating properly.

Rear Brake Pad Replacement

1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Remove the pad cover (Figure 12) from the cali-
per.
3. Remove the clip (Figure 13) from each retaining
pin. Note that each clip sits between the caliper and
the outboard brake pad. The clips must be rein-
stalled here during assembly.
4. Remove each retaining pin (A and B, Figure 14)
and remove the pad spring (A, Figure 15). Note that
