another 1/4 turn, another 1/4 turn, and another
to see if the wheel is correctly balanced.
10. Remove the test weight and install the correct
weight.
a. On wire spoke wheels, firmly crimp the bal-
ance weight onto the spoke(s) with a pair of
pliers (Figure 48).
b. On cast spoke wheels, crimp the balance
weight onto the rim.

TIRE CHANGING (LACED WHEELS)

The laced or wire wheels can easily be damaged
during tire removal. Special care must be taken
with tire irons to avoid scratches and gouges to the
outer rim surface. Insert rim protectors (Figure
49) or scraps of leather between the tire iron and
the rim.
Removal
CAUTION
While removing a front tire, support
the wheel on two blocks of wood, so
the brake disc does not contact the
floor.
1. Remove the wheel as described in this chapter.
2. If the tire will be reinstalled, place a balance
mark on the tire opposite the valve stem location
(Figure 46) so the tire can be reinstalled in the same
position for easier balancing.
3. Remove the valve core to deflate the tire.
4. Press the entire bead on both sides of the tire
away from the rim and into the center of the rim.
5. Lubricate both beads with soapy water.
NOTE
Use rim protectors (Figure 49) be
tween the tire irons and the rim to pro
tect the rim from damage. Also, use
only quality tire irons without sharp
edges (Figure 50). If necessary, file
the ends of the tire irons to remove
rough edges.
6. Insert the tire iron under the upper bead next to
the valve stem (Figure 51). Press the lower bead
into the center of the rim and pry the upper bead
over the rim with the tire iron.
7. Insert a second tire iron next to the first to hold
the bead over the rim (Figure 52). Work around the
