REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER
Removal
1. Drain the brake fluid from the rear brakes as de-
scribed in this chapter.
NOTE
The master cylinder can be removed
while the brake pedal/footrest assem
bly is installed on the motorcycle.
However, this is a very time consum
ing process. The master cylinder
parts are more easily accessible if the
brake pedal/footrest is removed first.
2. Remove the brake pedal/footrest assembly as
described in this chapter.
3. Remove the cotter pin (A, Figure 59) and
washer. Pull the clevis pin (B, Figure 59) from the
master cylinder clevis.
4. Separate the master cylinder clevis (A, Figure
60) from the brake lever (B). Remove the master
cylinder assembly and its bracket from the brake
pedal/footrest assembly.
5. Remove the snap ring (A, Figure 61) and pull
the reservoir hose fitting (B) from the port on the
master cylinder. Discard the fitting O-ring. A new
one must be installed during assembly.
Installation
1. Install a new O-ring onto the reservoir hose fit-
ting and insert the fitting (B, Figure 61) into the
master cylinder port.
2. Secure the fitting in place with the snap ring (A,
Figure 61). The snap ring must be completely
seated within the groove in the port.
3. Install the brake master cylinder clevis (A, Fig-
ure 60) onto the brake lever (B).
4. Secure it in place with the clevis pin (B, Figure
59).
5. Install the washer over the clevis pin and install a
new cotter pin (A, Figure 59).
6. Install the brake pedal/footrest assembly as de-
scribed in this chapter.
7. Add brake fluid and bleed the brakes as de-
scribed in this chapter.
Disassembly
Refer to Figure 62 when servicing the rear brake
master cylinder.
1. Remove the rear brake master cylinder as de-
scribed in this chapter.
2. Remove the bracket bolts (A, Figure 63). Lift
the guard (B, Figure 63) and the master cylinder
bracket (C) from the master cylinder body.
3. Roll back the dust boot (Figure 64) and remove
the snap ring (Figure 65) from its groove in the cyl-
inder bore.
4. Remove the pushrod assembly (A, Figure 66)
and the piston assembly (B) from the cylinder
bore. The spring should come out with the piston.
If it does not, remove the spring from the cylinder
bore.
5. Inspect the master cylinder and reservoir as de-
scribed in this chapter.
Assembly
1A. When reinstalling the piston, soak the piston in
fresh brake fluid for at least 15 minutes to make the
primary (A, Figure 67) and secondary cups (B) pli-
