brake lever aligns with the mark on the pedal
shaft (B, Figure 78). If these marks are not
visible, make new ones.
d. Slide the brake lever from the brake pedal
shaft.
e. Pull the return spring from the brake lever
shaft.
f. Slide the brake pedal from the footrest
bracket.
Installation
1. If the brake pedal was removed, perform the fol-
lowing:
a. Lubricate the brake pedal shaft with lithium
soap grease and slide the pedal onto the
bracket.
b. Install the return spring and the brake lever.
Make sure the alignment dot on the brake le-
ver aligns with the dot on the end of the brake
pedal shaft (B, Figure 78).
c. Tighten the lever clamp (A, Figure 78) bolt
securely.
d. Install the brake master cylinder clevis (A,
Figure 60) on the brake lever (B).
e. Secure it in place with the clevis pin (B, Fig-
ure 59).
f. Install the washer over the clevis pin and in-
stall a new cotter pin (A, Figure 59).
2. Set the brake pedal/footrest assembly in place on
the right side of the frame. Make sure the indexing
pin on the master cylinder bracket engages the hole
on the frame as shown in Figure 77.
3. Loosely install the master cylinder bracket bolts
(A, Figure 76) and the footrest bracket bolts (B).
Torque the footrest bracket bolts to 64 N•m (47
ft.-lb.) and torque the master cylinder bracket bolts
to 23 N•m (17 ft.-lb.).
4. Hook the rear brake switch spring (B, Figure
75) to the brake lever and connect the switch con-
nector (A) to its harness mate.
5. Place the cover over the master cylinder reser-
voir (B, Figure 74) and secure the reservoir in place
with the mounting bolt (A).
6. Use a new cable tie (C, Figure 75) to secure the
reservoir hose to the frame.
7. Install the brake hose (B, Figure 73) onto the port
on the rear master cylinder. Install a new copper
washer on each side of the hose fitting and torque the
banjo bolt (A, Figure 73) to 30 N•m (22 ft.-lb.).

Make sure the brake hose neck sets below the index
post (C, Figure 73) on the master cylinder.
8. Fill the master cylinder and bleed the system as
described in this chapter.
9. Adjust the brake pedal height and rear brake
switch as described in Chapter Three.
BRAKE DISC
The brake discs can be removed from the wheel
hub once the wheel is removed from the motorcy-
cle.
Inspection
A brake disc can be inspected while it is installed
on the wheel.
1. Clean any rust or corrosion from the disc, and
wipe it clean with brake parts cleaner. Never use
oil-based solvents. They may leave an oil residue on
the disc.
2. Measure the thickness of the disc at several loca-
tions around the disc with a vernier caliper or a mi-
crometer (Figure 79). Replace the disc if the
