5. Add brake fluid from a sealed brake fluid con-
tainer.
6. Reinstall the diaphragm, diaphragm plate and
the top cover.

Brake Pad Inspection

Inspect the brake pads for excessive or uneven
wear, scoring and oil or grease on the friction sur-
face.
1. Securely support the motorcycle on level
ground.
2. Look into the caliper assembly and inspect the
wear indicators (Figure 61).
3. Replace both pads in the caliper if either pad is
worn to the wear limit. On the front brakes, replace
both pads in both front calipers if any pad is worn to
the wear limit. Refer to Chapter Thirteen for brake
pad replacement.

Front Brake Lever Adjustment

The front brake lever free play is the distance the
brake lever moves before the master piston starts
moving. Brake lever free play is measured at the
end of the hand lever.
1. Push the brake lever forward, away from the
handle grip.
2. Pull the lever, and measure free play.
3. If the free play is outside the range specified in
Table 5, perform the following:
a. Loosen the brake adjuster locknut (A, Figure
62).
b. Turn the adjuster (B, Figure 62) in or out un-
til free play is within the specification. Turn-
ing the adjuster in (clockwise) decreases free
play; turning it out (counterclockwise) in-
creases free play.
4. After adjusting free play, spin the wheel and
check for any brake drag. Readjust free play as nec-
essary.

Rear Brake Pedal Adjustment

Rear brake pedal height is the distance from the
top of the brake pedal to the top of the footrest (Fig-
ure 63).
1. Securely support the motorcycle so it sits
straight up.
2. Make sure the brake pedal is in the at-rest posi-
tion.
3. Measure the distance from the top of the brake
pedal to the top of the footrest. If the pedal height is
not within the specification in Table 5, adjust the
pedal height as follows:
a. Loosen the adjuster locknut (A, Figure 64)
on the rear master cylinder clevis. Turn the
adjuster (B, Figure 64) until the pedal height
is within the specification. Turn the adjuster
