BEARING REMOVAL

NOTE
The following procedure describes
the use of the Kowa Seiki Wheel Bear
ing Remover shown in Figure 8. This
set is available from K & L Supply
Co., in Santa Clara, CA.
1. Select the correct size remover head and insert it
into the inner race of one bearing (Figure 9).
2. From the opposite side of the hub, insert the re-
mover shaft through the hub bore and into the slot in
the backside of the remover head. Position the hub
with the remover head resting against a solid sur-
face. Strike the remover shaft to force it into the slot
in the remover head. This tightens the remover head
against the bearing's inner race.
3. Reposition the wheel. Strike the end of the re-
mover shaft with a hammer and drive the bearing
out of the hub (Figure 10). Slide the bearing and
tool assembly out of the hub.
4. Tap the remover head to release it from the bear-
ing.
5. Remove the distance collar. Note how the collar
is positioned in the hub. It will have to be reinstalled
with the same orientation during assembly.
6. Repeat this procedure and remove the bearing
from the other side. The left side of the rear hub has
two bearings. Drive out each bearing as described
in this procedure.
NOTE
If the Kowa Seiki tool, or its equiva
lent, is not available, remove the
bearings as follows:
a. Use a long drift and hammer to tilt the dis-
tance collar away from one side of the right
bearing (Figure 11), then drive the right bear-
ing out of the hub.
b. Remove the distance collar and remove the
left bearing.
7. Clean the hub and distance collar with solvent.
Dry them with compressed air.
8. Install new bearings as described in this chapter.
