Needle Bearing Replacement

1. Use a blind bearing remover to remove each
bearing from the middle mount (C, Figure 8) on the
relay arm. Follow the instructions from the tool's
manufacturer.
2. Use a hydraulic press to remove a needle bearing
from the front and rear relay mounts (B and D, Fig-
ure 8). Support the relay arm in the press and use a
driver that matches the diameter of the needle bear-
ing (Figure 9).
3. Thoroughly clean and dry the bearing bore.
4. Pack the new bearing with molybdenum
disulfide grease.
5. Use a swing arm bearing installer, like the Mo-
tion Pro Swing Arm Bearing Tool (Figure 10, part
No. 08-0213) to install the new bearing. Follow the
manufacturer's instructions.
6. If a tool is not available, one can be fabricated
from a socket, three large washers, a threaded rod
and two nuts. Assemble the washers, threaded rod,
bearing and nuts as shown in Figure 11. Hold the
lower nut with a wrench and turn the upper nut to
press the bearing into the bearing bore. Turn the nut
slowly and watch the bearing carefully. Make sure it
does not turn sideways.
7. Position a bearing in its bore as described in
Swing Arm or Suspension Linkage.
SWING ARM
Refer to Figure 1.
Removal
1. Securely support the motorcycle on level
ground.
2. Remove the shock absorber and suspension link-
age as described in this chapter.
3. Check the swing arm bearing as follows:
a. Grasp both ends of the swing arm, and move
it up and down. The swing arm should move
smoothly with no binding or abnormal noise
from the bearings. If there is binding or noise,
the bearings are worn and must be replaced.
b. Try to move the swing arm from side to side
in a horizontal arc. If there is more than a
slight amount of movement, the bearings are
worn and must be replaced.
